Special session on the theme “Current Status of Marine Biodiversity in the Waters Around Korea.
The 2nd Asian Marine Biology Symposium was held at Ramada Plaza JejuHotel from October 1 to 4. Around 200 marine biologists from Korea, Japan and other Asian countries participated in the symposium. The Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea hosted a special session on the theme “Current Status of Marine Biodiversity in the Waters Around Korea.” During the session, 8 marine biologists from Korea and other countries made presentations on the latest research trends. The session also covered the status of a project to collect marine life specimens and the introduction of the Institute.In addition, the researchers who have newly joined the Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea made presentations on their new research on‘2 new sponge species’ and ‘the phylogeny of protozoa.’Head Director Shin Yeon-cheol, who received applause for his congratulatory remark, stated, “I believetoday’s discussion about the joint use of marine living resources among countries will raise awareness of the importance of Asia’s regional seas. The Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea is committed to developing Asia’s marine biology by securing marine life specimens and carrying out research projects designed to develop the marine industry.”
